FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does a 30 minute rating on an SCBA cylinder actually mean?

The rating is a nominal duration based on a standard consumption rate, not a guaranteed working time. Actual duration varies with the wearer’s breathing rate, workload and conditions, and heavy exertion shortens it substantially. Departments plan on the rating for classification and on real consumption for operations.

What is the difference between the 15 year and 30 year service life versions?

Composite SCBA cylinders carry a maximum service life from date of manufacture, after which they must be removed from service regardless of condition. A 15 year cylinder reaches that point sooner than a 30 year one, which affects fleet replacement planning and total cost of ownership. Both are requalified at intervals during their life.

Why is this cylinder supplied with no valve?

It is sold as a cylinder only, which suits fleets that transfer existing valves, standardize on a specific valve, or hold valves in their own stock. Confirm the valve you intend to fit is correct for this cylinder and pressure rating before ordering. We stock a range of valves and can quote them alongside.

What does "Scott/MSA type" mean?

It indicates the cylinder is configured to suit the common Scott and MSA style breathing apparatus arrangements rather than being an original manufacturer branded part. Confirm compatibility with your specific apparatus model before ordering, since configurations vary across generations of equipment.

How often must an SCBA cylinder be requalified?

Composite cylinders are requalified on a set interval under DOT rules, with the date stamped or labelled on the cylinder, and they are also subject to a maximum service life. A filler checks both before filling and will refuse a cylinder that is out of date or beyond life. All Safe Global is a DOT-authorized requalifier and can perform this work.

Can All Safe Global requalify our existing SCBA fleet?

Yes. We operate DOT-authorized requalification centers with hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing and visual inspection. For a fleet approaching a requalification cycle, testing is usually the lower cost route compared with replacement, provided the cylinders remain within service life. Fleet work is quoted per cylinder.

Does the cylinder ship filled?

No. All cylinders ship empty for transport safety. Breathing air filling requires equipment and air quality controls specific to that service, so it is done by a qualified breathing air supplier, not a general gas filler.

Can we order SCBA cylinders in fleet quantities?

Yes. All Safe Global supplies fire departments, industrial safety programs and distributors at wholesale, and pricing improves with quantity. Send your quantity, duration rating and valve requirement and we will quote with availability and freight.

What should be checked on an SCBA cylinder before it goes back into service?

Confirm the requalification date is current, confirm the cylinder is within its maximum service life, and inspect the composite wrap for cuts, abrasion, heat damage or delamination. Any damage to the composite is disqualifying and is not repairable. Cylinders failing inspection are removed from service permanently.

How should SCBA cylinders be stored between uses?

Store them secured and upright where practical, away from direct heat, ultraviolet exposure and chemical contact, all of which degrade composite over time. Keep valve protection in place. Fleet storage that shields cylinders from sunlight materially extends usable condition within the service life.
